200 Plates, One Tuesday: Inside Our June 23 Roadside Breakfast Drive in Hyderabad

"Hunger doesn't take a day off — and neither do we. This Tuesday was the same Tuesday as every other Tuesday: warm food, drinking water, two hundred plates, no fanfare."

Yesterday was Tuesday, June 23, 2026 — and yesterday, like every Tuesday for years now, Smile With Shine Welfare Society ran its Roadside Breakfast Drive on the streets of Hyderabad. By the end of the morning, more than 200 people had eaten a warm, freshly prepared meal — daily wage workers waiting at coolie addas, homeless individuals on pavements, roadside dwellers, and anyone else who walked up and said they were hungry. This blog is a short, honest record of what that morning actually looked like.

The Drive, in Numbers

Two hundred meals. One Tuesday. Roughly ₹20,000 worth of food, fuel, packaging and water, funded entirely by donors and volunteers who do not ask to be named. But first, the morning itself.

5:30 a.m. — The Kitchen, the Vehicle, the Road

Every Tuesday breakfast drive begins long before sunrise. The food is cooked fresh in batches, packed into hot containers, drinking water is filled, banana leaves and disposable plates are loaded, and the team's vehicle hits the road by 6:30 a.m. By the time we reach the first location, the city is still half-awake — which is exactly when the people we serve are most active. Daily wage workers are already lined up at coolie addas at 7 a.m. waiting to be picked up for the day's construction work. If they don't get hired by 8:30 a.m., they go home without earnings. If they go home without earnings, they often go home without food. The breakfast drive is timed to intercept that exact window.

Where We Stopped — Coolie Addas and Roadsides

The June 23 drive moved through several of Hyderabad's regular coolie adda stops — the roadside gathering points where daily wage workers congregate at sunrise. A coolie adda is one of the most quietly important places in any Indian city. It is where construction labourers, loaders, painters, masons and porters wait to be hired. If a contractor's vehicle pulls up, they earn that day. If no vehicle comes, they don't. There is no severance, no buffer, no second chance — just the next day's wait.

For people in that situation, a warm breakfast on a Tuesday is not just food. It is the difference between facing an empty morning with energy or facing it with low blood sugar and a long, hot day ahead.

Who Served — And Why That Detail Matters

Four senior members of the Smile With Shine team were on the ground yesterday, serving each plate by hand:

We mention this on purpose. In a lot of NGO photographs, the founders show up for a quick photo at the start, hand over a symbolic plate, and leave. That is not how this organisation runs. The same four people who sit on the board sit on the kerb. The same hands that sign the cheques serve the food. Yesterday was no exception.

What Was on the Plate

Yesterday's breakfast was a hot, freshly cooked South Indian style breakfast — the kind that fills you up properly, holds you through a long working morning, and doesn't sit heavy on a person who may not have eaten in 12 hours. Drinking water was served alongside every plate — partly because dehydration is the second-biggest health risk on Hyderabad's streets in summer (the first is sun exposure), and partly because a hot meal without water is incomplete.

We don't publish the exact menu for every drive on the blog, because it depends on what is fresh, what is in season and what is being donated that week — but the principle is constant: hot, freshly cooked, vegetarian, filling, served on a clean plate with drinking water on the side.

No Queue. No Charity Line. No Public Embarrassment.

One small operational detail that we have refined over years: we don't run a queue. We walk to the person. The team carries the food and water along the line of waiting workers, the pavement, the resting spot, the verandah — wherever someone is. Each plate is placed into a person's hand, not pushed across a counter from behind a table.

This is the same principle that drives our "homelessness is a circumstance, not an identity" approach. A meal handed over with eye contact, on a person's own ground, is fundamentally different from a meal collected from a charity queue under a city flyover. One restores dignity. The other quietly chips at it.

The Numbers in Context

A single Tuesday drive at this scale costs roughly ₹20,000 to run, end to end — ingredients, cooking, fuel, packaging, water, transportation. What that funds is easy to picture: one person, one warm plate, one Tuesday morning.
