“Old age should be a time of peace, not abandonment. Yet thousands of elderly individuals across India face neglect, abuse, poverty, and isolation in what should be their golden years.”
Somewhere between the Tuesday Breakfast Drive and the school kit distributions, there is a quieter body of work at Smile With Shine Welfare Society that does not usually make it into the weekly highlights. It has no fixed day of the week and no ceremony. It is our Elderly Care & Protection intervention — home visits, hot meals in old-age homes, ration and essentials for senior citizens, and the small, patient act of sitting beside someone who has been alone for a long time.
This post is a short look at that work — the what, the why, and the ways any supporter can be a part of it.
Why Elderly Care Is a Whole-Society Problem
For most Indian families, elderly care is a private matter, handled quietly at home. But for many senior citizens — the abandoned, the impoverished, those with no children nearby — old age arrives without a support system. What should be a season of rest becomes a season of neglect.
Across our communities in Hyderabad, we see the same picture again and again:
- Elderly individuals on street corners and pavements, ageing without shelter.
- Senior citizens running households on nothing after retirement or the loss of a partner.
- Elderly residents of old-age homes who go weeks without a proper meal or a visitor.
- Retired parents whose children have moved away and whose pensions do not stretch.
Old age is not a punishment. It is a season — and every season deserves care.
The Work, in Numbers
| Programme | How Often | Reach |
|---|---|---|
| Meals in old-age homes | Regular sponsor-led visits | 20–100+ elderly per meal |
| Home visits to senior citizens | Year-round | One-to-one, on need basis |
| Ration & essentials for senior citizens | Monthly & festival cycles | Elderly individuals and families in partner communities |
| Tuesday Breakfast Drive — elderly on the street | Every Tuesday | Elderly homeless & roadside dwellers |
| Sponsor-led celebrations | Birthdays, anniversaries, memorials | Old-age homes and single-family visits |
No inflated numbers. No “lives changed” statistics. Just the same work, done month after month, with the people who need it.
What a Typical Elderly Care Visit Looks Like
The programme has no single template — every visit is shaped by what the person or the home actually needs — but the shape is roughly this:
- A phone call ahead of time, so the home or the family knows we are coming.
- A hot, freshly cooked meal, packed for the number expected.
- Basic essentials where relevant: soap, oil, a change of clothes, warm coverings in winter, a walking aid where possible.
- Time. We sit. We ask. We listen. We do not rush.
- Follow-up, so the visit is not a one-off photograph.
There is no queue. There is no separation of “beneficiary” and “team”. A meal is placed into a person’s hands. A minute is spent. And then the next.
Where Elderly Care Overlaps With Our Other Work
Elderly care rarely lives in isolation. It sits inside the wider fabric of our year-round programmes:
- Tuesday Breakfast Drives — many of the men and women served on the road are senior citizens who have no home to return to. The elderly homeless are among the first faces at every coolie adda we visit.
- Homeless Welfare — the elderly on our roads live in the intersection of homelessness and old age; the meal, the winter blanket and the moment of conversation are all part of the same visit.
- Family & Livelihood Support — many of the families we visit have an elderly member in the household whose care intersects with the family’s day-to-day needs.
You cannot really separate these lines. We do not try to.
Who Runs It
Every elderly care visit is led personally by our senior team, the same people who lead every drive we run:
- Smt. Grace Mani — Founder.
- Sri. Gangarapu Satyapal — General Secretary.
- Sri. Lazarus — Treasurer.
- Smt. Mary — Advisor.
Alongside a wider volunteer team who cook, pack and sit beside our elderly for as long as the day allows. The people who plan the visit on paper are the people who serve the meal on the ground.
How You Can Be a Part of Elderly Care
There is no fixed template and no minimum. Supporters have joined this work in many forms:
- Sponsor a meal for an old-age home — one hot meal for one home for one day.
- Sponsor a month of ration for a senior citizen on our follow-up list.
- Sponsor a birthday, anniversary or memorial by hosting it as a meal for an old-age home — full explainer at Celebrate With A Purpose.
- Sponsor a Tuesday breakfast plate for the elderly homeless we serve every week — details.
- Volunteer with the team — cook, pack, or come with us on a home visit.
