“A drive is not a moment. It is a promise, kept in public, one Tuesday at a time — and stitched together with a dozen quieter ones through the rest of the week.”
At Smile With Shine Welfare Society, the work happens on many days of the week and in many corners of Hyderabad. Some of it is loud — a hundred plates being handed out at sunrise on a coolie adda. Some of it is quiet — a school kit reaching one child, a sewing machine reaching one mother, a warm meal reaching one senior citizen in an old-age home.
This post is a short round-up of the drives and campaigns that make up a typical year of our work — the ones that repeat every week, the ones that repeat every month, and the special-day drives that mark the calendar. It is written for anyone new to our work who wants a single, honest snapshot of what we do, why we do it, and how they can be a part of it.
The Weekly Backbone — Tuesday Roadside Breakfast Drive
Every Tuesday, without exception, our team is on the streets of Hyderabad before sunrise with warm, freshly cooked homemade breakfast. The vehicle rolls out by 6:30 a.m. Coolie addas, pavements, verandas under the metro, roadside gathering points — the same route, week after week.
- 200+ plates served on a typical Tuesday morning.
- 50+ consecutive Tuesdays of the drive so far.
- Served hand-to-hand, eye-to-eye — never through a queue.
Recent recaps: July 14 (sponsored by Smt. Sarika Garu) · July 7 · June 30 · June 23.
Children & Education — Kits and Community Learning Centres
Alongside the food work, our education work runs quietly through the year. Two pillars carry it:
- Educational Kits Drive — at the start of every academic year we hand a complete school kit (school bag, notebooks, pencils, pens and essential learning materials) to underprivileged children so they walk into their first day of school with the same tools every other child has. Full recap: Educational Kits for Children From Blind, Leprosy-Affected & Differently-Abled Families.
- Community Learning Centres (CLCs) — our neighbourhood classrooms in slums, migrant colonies and underserved pockets, where children who are out of school, have dropped out or are at risk receive remedial education, bridge courses and learning support tailored to their pace.
Together, the kits, the centres and the everyday encouragement form what our founder simply calls “a fresh start, one child at a time.”
Family & Livelihood Support
Not every intervention is a “drive”. Some are one family at a time — a mother without a livelihood, a father in cancer treatment, a daughter with a disability, a college-going son with no bag or books. Where we can, we step in.
- Sewing machines for mothers who can stitch but do not have the tool.
- Leggings, clothes, kits and college supplies for the children of these families.
- Warm meals delivered to homes when the family cannot come to a drive.
The most recent story: A 10-Month Prayer Answered — a sewing machine, leggings and a college bag for one family.
Special-Day Drives — Turning Celebrations Into Meals
Certain days on the calendar have become our own quiet festivals — days we mark by feeding, gifting and remembering people the rest of the city forgets to think about.
- Father’s Day — clothes distribution for orphan and needy fathers (recap).
- Mother’s Day — a warm drive in honour of the mothers we walk with, especially widowed and elderly women.
- Society Anniversary — a community lunch, shared with the people we serve, not just with donors (1st Anniversary recap).
- Personal celebrations — birthdays, wedding anniversaries and special occasions that supporters convert into a sponsored meal for a Tuesday drive or a monthly programme. Full explainer: Celebrate With A Purpose.
The Twelve Communities We Walk With
Behind every drive is a list of communities we have committed to. Our Interventions page lists the full twelve; the short version is:
- Homeless Welfare — meals, warm clothing, hygiene kits.
- HIV & AIDS — nutritional support, non-judgemental care.
- Leprosy Care — ration, winter care, meals in leprosy colonies.
- Blind & Visually Impaired — education, employment, family support.
- Disability Inclusion — support for physical, intellectual and developmental needs.
- Elderly Care — meals in old-age homes, essentials, dignity.
- Widow Support — livelihood, community, respect.
- Orphan Care & Education — school enrolment, learning materials, holistic child development.
- Transgender Welfare — partnership, not pity.
- Government School Development — repair, materials, teacher partnership.
- Adolescent & Youth Empowerment — awareness sessions, skills, confidence.
- Community Learning Centres (CLCs) — education at the doorstep of underserved communities.

No fancy averaging. No inflated impact claims. Just the same work, done every week, with the same people.
Who Runs It
Every drive and campaign is led personally by our senior team:
- Smt. Grace Mani — Founder (recipient of the Bharatiya Seva Ratna National Award).
- Sri. Gangarapu Satyapal — General Secretary.
- Sri. Lazarus — Treasurer.
- Smt. Mary — Advisor.
Alongside the wider volunteer team who cook, pack, drive, teach, distribute and stand at the back of the vehicle every single Tuesday. The people who plan the work on paper are the people who serve it on the ground.
How You Can Be a Part of the Next Drive
There is no minimum contribution and no fixed template. Supporters have joined us in every form — from sponsoring a single Tuesday plate to funding a full monthly programme in someone’s memory. Some ideas:
- Sponsor a Tuesday — one full 200-plate Tuesday breakfast drive in your name.
- Sponsor a School Kit — one complete Educational Kit for one child at the start of the academic year.
- Sponsor a Special-Day Drive — turn your birthday, anniversary or a loved one’s memory into a warm meal for the homeless, orphan children, elderly or differently-abled (details).
- Sponsor a Family — one-time support for a family whose story needs a listener as much as a rupee.
- Volunteer with the team — cook, pack, distribute or teach at a Community Learning Centre.
